Russian: from Greek Hilarion, a derivative of Hilarios (see HILARY (SEE Hilary)). St Hilarion (c.291–c.371) was a famous hermit born at Gaza in Palestine; he desired to live a solitary, contemplative life, but was continually forced to move on by the crowds that flocked to follow him.
